Last Night’s All-Star Game

I’m not a baseball fan. I find the game much too slow with all the time between pitches and all the warmup needed between innings. I prefer other sports over baseball. I generally watch playoff baseball, as the pitching tends to be excellent and the frequency of 1-0 games seems to be higher. Last night, however, I watched the All-Star Game from start to finish, and walked away from that experience thinking, “if baseball was always like this, I’d watch every day!”

The game was fast – most of it was over within 2 hours, and I think the final tally was about 2.5 hours. Numerous innings involved just a few pitches – I think Mark Buehle threw 6 pitches, Ervin Someoneoranother from Detroit threw 4 pitches, etc. The pitching was excellent, and batters were swinging at first pitches, making the game quick and action-packed. Numerous times we saw matchups of leading base stealers going up against leading catchers, making each pitch drama-filled.

The media tells us over and over that baseball’s All-Star Game is an anachronism, and that viewership and relevance is at an all-time low. For me, last night’s game was superb sports that really drew me in. I’ll definitely tune-in next year and hope to see another great game.
